Wire Mesh

Welded wire mesh is made of straight steel wires laid in a grid and resistance welded at every intersection. Because every crossing is welded, the panel keeps its shape when it is cut, bent or fixed into a frame, and the strength is spread over the whole sheet. That is what makes it the standard material for machine guards, cages, partitions and display systems.

The Wire Mesh section has two subcategories with the same type of panel in two finishes:

Hot Dip Galvanized

Hot-dip galvanizing coats the steel with zinc by immersing it in a bath of molten zinc. The zinc layer protects the metal against corrosion, so galvanized mesh is the choice for anything outdoors, on a farm or in a humid building.

Copper Washed

Copper washed mesh has a thin copper layer that gives the wire a warm copper color. It is popular for interior work where the look matters, such as displays, shelving, partitions and decorative panels. For outdoor use, choose the galvanized version.

The mesh opening decides what passes through the panel and how see-through it is. Across both finishes, these openings are available:

• 1" x 1"
• 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"
• 2" x 1"
• 2" x 2"
• 3" x 1/2"
• 3" x 1"
• 3" x 3"
• 4" x 1"
• 4" x 4"

Small openings such as 1" x 1" or 3" x 1/2" keep small animals and fingers out and are hard to climb. Large openings such as 3" x 3" or 4" x 4" use less steel and keep the view open. Not every opening comes in every wire thickness, so check the combinations in each subcategory.

• 12 GA (0.106"): light shelving, displays and partitions.
• 10 GA (0.134"): general guards, cages and lockers.
• 8 GA (0.157"): heavy guards, window guards and security grills.
• 6 GA (0.197"): the heaviest wire in the range, for the toughest guards and enclosures.

Welded mesh panels are made in five stock sizes:

• 4' x 8'
• 6' x 12'
• 6' x 3'
• 6' x 4'
• 7' x 12'

• Location: galvanized for outdoors and humid rooms, copper washed for dry indoor spaces.
• Look: galvanized has a matte zinc finish, copper washed a warm copper color.
• Typical jobs: galvanized for pens, guards and grills, copper washed for displays, shelving and decorative panels.
• Openings: both finishes share most openings; the 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" opening is in the Copper Washed range.

1. Choose the finish for the location: Hot Dip Galvanized or Copper Washed.
2. Choose the mesh opening for what must stay in or out.
3. Choose the wire gauge for the load the panel must take.
4. Choose a stock panel size, or ask for a quote on a custom size.
5. Count the panels, and add clips or fixings for the frame you will mount them on.

1. Mark the cut line just beyond a cross wire, so the cut ends are short and even.
2. Cut with bolt cutters for thin wire, or an angle grinder for heavy wire.
3. File or grind off sharp ends.
4. On galvanized mesh, touch up cut ends with zinc-rich paint.
5. Fix the panel with clips, U-bolts or screws and washers, or weld it into a frame.
