What is a chain link fence?
A chain link fence is fabric stretched between terminal posts. A terminal post stands at every end, every corner and on both sides of every gate, and takes the pull of the fabric. Line posts stand between the terminals, at most 10 ft apart, and hold the fabric up. A top rail runs along the top through the line post caps, a tension wire runs along the bottom, and a set of fittings holds it all together.
Every part is also sold separately, so you can build exactly the fence you need, or replace one part of an existing fence.
Galvanized, black or green?
Galvanized chain link is the classic silver fence: bare zinc-coated steel. The 9 gauge galvanized fabric is galvanized after weaving, so the zinc also covers the cut ends and the twists, where a fabric rusts first.
Black and green chain link uses vinyl coated fabric: a 9 gauge galvanized steel core bonded in a thick PVC coat. The posts, rail and fittings come in the same color, so the fence blends into a garden or a field instead of shining. Choose one finish for the whole fence: fabric, posts, rail and fittings.
Which wire gauge do I need?
The gauge is the thickness of the wire: the lower the number, the heavier the wire.
- 11.5 gauge economy fabric, 2-1/4" mesh: uses less steel per roll, the budget fabric for long runs around a yard, a pasture or a field.
- 11 gauge residential fabric, 2" mesh: the usual choice for yards and dog runs, lighter to stretch.
- 9 gauge fabric, 2" mesh: the heavy fabric of schools, sports grounds, warehouses and utility sites, and the core of the vinyl coated fabric.
- 6 gauge commercial fabric, 2" mesh: the heaviest standard fabric, for prisons, utilities, airports and other high-security perimeters, on Schedule 40 posts.
What parts do I need for a chain link fence?
- Fabric in 50 ft rolls, in the height of the fence.
- Terminal posts of 2-3/8" at every end, corner and gate side.
- Line posts of 1-5/8", at most 10 ft apart, each with a loop cap for the top rail.
- Top rail in 21 ft swaged lengths, with a rail end cup at each terminal.
- At each terminal: a tension bar, tension bands, brace bands, a dome cap and a carriage bolt for every band.
- A bottom tension wire closed to the fabric with hog rings, and aluminum ties for the line posts and the top rail.
Complete kits for one straight run
A Complete Chain Link Fence Kit is the parts list for a straight fence with a terminal post at each end: the fabric rolls, a line post every 10 ft, top rail with loop caps, a tension bar and tension bands at each end, brace bands, dome caps, a bottom tension wire with hog rings, aluminum ties and the carriage bolts for every band.
Kits come in heights of 4, 5 or 6 ft, in black, green or galvanized, for runs from 50 to 250 ft. Concrete is not included. Every corner and every gate post is one more terminal post with its own tension bars and bands; add those and the gates from the parts pages, or ask us to draw up the list for your plan.
Gates and privacy slats
Chain link walk gates are 3, 4 or 5 ft wide, with a welded steel frame filled with the same fabric as the fence. A walk gate up to 4 ft hangs on a 2-3/8" terminal post with a pair of hinges and a fork latch that takes a padlock. Double drive gates open 10, 12 or 16 ft and hang on 2-7/8" gate posts, or on 4" Schedule 40 posts for the widest gates. Gates are made to order, and we confirm the lead time with your quote.
Bottom locking HDPE privacy slats weave into 2" mesh fabric and close up to about 75 percent of the view. One bundle fills 10 ft of fence, in heights of 4, 5 and 6 ft and in black, green, brown, tan or white.
Commercial chain link
Commercial and security fences use Schedule 40 galvanized pipe, the heaviest standard fence pipe, with a wall more than twice that of residential framework: 1-7/8" line posts and 2-3/8", 2-7/8" and 4" terminal and gate posts, for fences up to 12 ft. They carry 6 or 9 gauge fabric, barbed wire arms and heavy gates.
Between residential and Schedule 40 sits the heavy-duty 2-3/8" terminal post with a .095" wall, for fences from 6 to 8 ft. On fences of 6 ft and up, a mid rail on line rail clamps stiffens the fence, and a truss rod braces each terminal post.
Other chain link parts
- Barbed wire arms for round posts, and barbed wire in rolls
- A weld-on base plate of 6" x 6" x 1/4" for posts on concrete
- Touch-up spray in black, or zinc-rich cold galvanizing for galvanized fences
- Strap end-connectors, tension rod parts and other fixings

Frequently asked questions
What gauge chain link fence should I buy?
11 gauge suits most yards and dog runs, 9 gauge is the heavy fabric for schools, sports grounds and commercial sites, and 6 gauge is for high-security perimeters.
What parts do I need for a chain link fence?
Fabric, terminal posts at ends, corners and gates, line posts, top rail, and at each terminal a tension bar, tension bands, brace bands and a dome cap, plus tension wire, hog rings, ties and carriage bolts.
Is black chain link better than galvanized?
Both are galvanized steel. Black and green add a thick PVC coat over the zinc, which closes the steel off from the weather and blends into the surroundings; galvanized is the classic silver fence.
Can I add privacy slats to chain link fence?
Yes. Bottom locking HDPE slats weave into 2" mesh fabric and close up to about 75 percent of the view, one bundle per 10 ft of fence.
How far apart are chain link line posts?
At most 10 ft apart. Terminal posts go at every end, every corner and on both sides of every gate.
Can I pick up my order in Dallas?
Yes. Ask for pickup when you order or request a quote, and we tell you when your order is ready.
How tall can a chain link fence be?
Fabric runs from 3 ft high, and the 9 gauge and 6 gauge galvanized fabrics go up to 12 ft on Schedule 40 framework.
