Chain Link Fence Posts
Chain link fence posts hold the fabric up and keep it tight. Line posts stand along the run, terminal posts sit at ends, corners and gates and take the pull of the fabric, and gate posts carry wide gates. Choose the post by its job, then by diameter and wall thickness, and add top rail to tie the posts together. Read more

Highlights

Line, terminal and gate posts
1-5/8" line posts, 2-3/8" terminal posts and 2-7/8" gate posts, each sized for its job.

Heavy-duty and Schedule 40
A thicker-walled 2-3/8" terminal post, or Schedule 40 pipe for commercial fences.

Swaged top rail
21 ft lengths that slide into each other, with no couplings.

Length follows the height
Line and terminal posts are 2 ft longer than the fabric, for the concrete footing.
Line, terminal and gate posts: what each one does
- Line post, 1-5/8", 16 gauge: stands between the terminal posts at most 10 ft apart and holds the fabric up. A loop cap on top carries the top rail.
- Terminal post, 2-3/8", 16 gauge: at each end, at every corner and on both sides of a gate. It takes the pull of the stretched fabric, so it is heavier than a line post.
- Heavy-duty terminal post, 2-3/8" with a .095" wall, the wall known in the trade as 13 gauge, galvanized: for fences from 6 to 8 ft and long runs. It keeps the 2-3/8" size, so every standard band, cap and hinge fits.
- Gate post, 2-7/8": for gates wider than 4 ft and double drive gates, which swing more weight on their hinges.
The round 2-3/8" fence post listed as 13 GA is also in this category. It comes in lengths from 6'1" to 22'8", hot-dip galvanized or powder coated in fir green, anthracite gray or black.
Sizes and specifications
- Line and terminal posts: for fence heights of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 ft, in black, green or galvanized.
- Gate posts: for fence heights of 4 to 8 ft, in black, green or galvanized.
- Heavy-duty terminal post: for fence heights of 6, 7 and 8 ft, galvanized.
- Schedule 40: 1-7/8", 2-3/8", 2-7/8" and 4", for fence heights of 6 to 12 ft, hot-dip galvanized.
- Top rail: 21 ft lengths in 1-3/8" or 1-5/8", 16 gauge, black, green or galvanized.
Which length do I need?
Line and terminal posts are 2 ft longer than the fabric height, the part that goes into the concrete footing. Gate posts and Schedule 40 posts are 3 ft longer than the fence height, for a deeper footing. Choose the post by the height of your fence and the length follows.
Top rail and how it connects
One end of every top rail length is swaged, narrowed so it slides into the next length, so the rail runs on without couplings. It runs through the loop caps of the line posts and ends in a rail end cup at each terminal post. Allow one length for every 20.5 ft of fence, a little extra for the overlap at the swaged ends. Use 1-3/8" rail for residential fences and 1-5/8" for heavier ones.
Residential or Schedule 40 commercial posts?
Schedule 40 is the heaviest standard fence pipe, hot-dip galvanized, with a wall more than twice that of residential framework. It carries 6 gauge fabric, barbed wire arms and heavy gates. Use 1-7/8" for line posts, 2-3/8" or 2-7/8" for terminals and 4" for large gates. Schedule 40 framework is cut to the length your fence needs.
How to install chain link posts
- Call 811 to have buried utilities marked, then mark the ends, corners and gate openings.
- Set the terminal and gate posts first, in concrete, plumb and at the right height above the ground.
- Stretch a string line between the terminals and set the line posts along it, no more than 10 ft apart.
- Let the concrete cure, then fit the caps, bands and top rail.
- Hang the fabric, stretch it from terminal to terminal and tie it to the line posts and rail.
Which fittings go on each post?
- Terminal post: a tension bar, tension bands, brace bands, a rail end cup and a dome cap.
- Line post: a loop cap for the top rail, and aluminum ties for the fabric.
- Gate post: gate hinges and a latch in the size of the post.
- On fences of 6 ft and up: a mid rail on line rail clamps, and a truss rod to brace each terminal.
Posts on concrete
On a slab or a wall, weld a 6" x 6" x 1/4" base plate to the foot of the post instead of setting it in a footing, paint it, and anchor it with four concrete bolts. The plate is supplied bare, to finish with touch-up spray after welding.
Ordering and delivery
Schedule 40 framework is delivered by truck or can be picked up in Dallas, Texas. We confirm sizes and lead time for Schedule 40 framework with your quote. A size without a price on its product page is sold on request. Fenceweb delivers to every US state and to Canada.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a line post and a terminal post?
A line post holds the fabric up along the run. A terminal post stands at ends, corners and gates and takes the pull of the stretched fabric, so it is heavier.
How far apart should chain link posts be?
Line posts stand at most 10 ft apart. Terminal posts go at every end, every corner and on both sides of every gate.
How deep do chain link fence posts go?
Line and terminal posts are 2 ft longer than the fabric, the part set in the concrete footing. Gate posts and Schedule 40 posts are 3 ft longer than the fence height.
What is a Schedule 40 post?
The heaviest standard fence pipe, hot-dip galvanized, with a wall more than twice that of residential framework. It is used for commercial and security fences.
What is a swaged top rail?
A top rail with one end narrowed so it slides into the next length. The rail runs on in one line without separate couplings.
Which post do I need for a gate?
A walk gate up to 4 ft hangs on a 2-3/8" terminal post. Wider gates and double drive gates hang on 2-7/8" gate posts, or 4" Schedule 40 for the widest.
