Sliding Gates
A sliding gate rolls sideways along the fence line instead of swinging open, so it suits short driveways, driveways on a slope and wide site entrances. The ornamental steel sliding gate here runs on two V-groove wheels, has a flat top and comes 14 ft or 24 ft wide and 4 to 8 ft high in black. Read more

When should I choose a sliding gate?
A swing gate needs a clear arc to open into. Where the driveway is short, rises behind the gate or opens onto a sidewalk, that arc is not there, and a sliding gate is the answer: it moves along the fence, parallel to it. Sliding gates also suit wide entrances to business sites, where one swing leaf would be very long and heavy.
The ornamental steel sliding gate
- Two V-groove wheels, so the gate rolls along a track at the bottom.
- 1" square pickets in a rectangular frame, with a flat top.
- Frame of 2" x 3" on the 4 ft and 5 ft gates and 2" x 4" on the 6 ft and 8 ft gates.
- Listed in 14 ft and 24 ft widths, each in 4, 5, 6 and 8 ft heights.
- 16, 18 and 20 ft widths are available on request.
- Finished black, to match black ornamental steel fence.
Measuring the opening and the run-back space
- Measure the clear opening between the posts or walls on either side of the entrance.
- Choose a gate width that covers the opening; ask us if your opening falls between the listed widths.
- Check the run-back: the gate slides along the fence beside the opening, so you need a clear, level stretch about as long as the gate itself on the side it opens to.
- Check the ground along the whole run, because the gate rolls on wheels at the bottom.
Hardware for sliding gates
A sliding gate needs a lock made for gates that slide. Gate Locks lists Locinox sliding gate locks such as the Sixtylock-S, Sixtylock-LS and Fiftylock-LS insert locks and the Leonardo mechanical code lock, and Gatemaster sliding gate code locks that need no power. Magnetic Gate Locks lists the Locinox S-MAG integrated magnet lock for sliding gates. For wheels and guides, the Shut It HardCORE range from D&D Technologies in Gate Hardware covers V-groove and cantilever wheels and a gate guide.
