Post Caps

A fence post cap closes the top of a post so rain cannot get in, and gives the fence a finished look. Choose the cap by the shape and outside size of the post, round or square, and by material: PVC, aluminum or steel. Fortress ball, dome, line and corner caps are made for Fortress ornamental posts. Why does every post need a cap?

A steel post is a hollow tube. Left open, it fills with rain, dirt and leaves, and the water can rust the post from the inside. A cap closes the top, protects the post end from knocks and makes the fence look finished. Caps do not add strength, but they help the posts last.

Which cap fits my post?

Measure the outside of the post: the diameter of a round post, or both sides of a square one. Then pick the cap for that size:

  • Round PVC caps for 1-5/8", 2-3/8" and 3-1/2" posts, plus an inline cap with hooks for 2-3/8" posts.
  • Square caps for 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" posts in PVC and in aluminum.
  • A steel cap for 3" x 3" posts.

PVC, aluminum or steel?

PVC caps are light, simple to fit and suit most residential and light commercial fences. Aluminum caps do not rust and give a crisp metal finish. The steel cap is the heaviest option, for the 3" x 3" post on security and industrial fences.

Caps for rails and frame fences

Some caps do more than close a post. The cap with a pass-through sits on a 2-3/8" post and lets a 1-5/8" rail run through it. The aluminum brace end cap closes a 1-5/8" tube. T-connectors join rails to the post top: 1-5/8" rails on a 2-3/8" post, 2-3/8" rails on a 2-3/8" post, and 2-3/8" rails on a 3-1/2" post.

Barbed wire arms for 2-3/8" square and round posts are listed here too, because they fit at the top of the post.

Fortress post caps

Fortress caps close the post against water and finish it in the same gloss black as the fence:

  • A2 Commercial Aluminum: pressed dome cap for 3" x 3" posts.
  • Athens Residential Aluminum: pressed dome cap for 1-1/2", 2" or 2-1/2" posts.
  • Titan Industrial: line post cap and corner post cap for 3" x 3" posts.
  • V2 Commercial: ball cap for 4" x 4" posts, poly cap for 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" posts, curved top line and corner caps for 2-1/2" or 3" posts, and a pressed dome cap for 2-1/2", 4" or 6" posts.
  • Versai: ball cap and nylon cap for 2" x 2" posts, and a pressed dome cap for 1-1/2", 2" or 3" posts.

How do I fit a post cap?

The caps slide or press onto the top of the post. Make sure the post top is clean and cut square, and on a Fortress fence use the cap made for your Fortress line and post size.

Frequently asked questions

Which cap fits my post?

The cap made for the shape and outside size of your post. Measure the diameter of a round post, or both sides of a square post, before you order.

Why should I put a cap on a fence post?

An open post fills with rain and dirt, which can rust it from the inside. A cap keeps the water out and gives the fence a finished look.

Which cap material should I choose?

PVC for most residential and light commercial fences, aluminum for a cap that does not rust, and steel for the 3" x 3" post on security and industrial fences.

Do Fortress posts need Fortress caps?

Yes, use the Fortress cap for your line and post size, such as Versai, V2 Commercial or Titan Industrial. They are gloss black like the fence.

What is a cap with a pass-through for?

It closes a 2-3/8" post and lets a 1-5/8" rail run through it, for fences with a continuous top rail.
