What are the ways to anchor a fence post?
- A concrete footing: the post stands in a hole filled with concrete. This is the usual method in open ground.
- Post setting compound: Fortress ReadySet sets the post in its hole without mixing concrete by hand.
- A base plate: the post is fixed to a plate that is bolted to a slab, a foundation or a wall.
- Anchoring epoxy: Fortress Pro-Poxy sets anchors and posts in concrete.
How does a base plate work?
A base plate is used wherever a post cannot go into the ground. The plate is fixed to a flat, solid surface such as a foundation, a concrete floor or a wall, with hex screws and anchors. The hollow post slides over the support tube of the plate and is fastened with at least two self-tapping screws. Once those screws are in, the post cannot be pulled off. The length of the support tube depends on the height of the fence or gate.
Which base plate fits my post?
- Square 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" posts: a short base plate.
- Rectangular 2-3/8" x 1-9/16" posts: a short base plate and a short L-shape base plate.
- Round 2-3/8" posts: a base plate of about 12" long.
Short base plates suit light to medium-duty fences. On higher fences or in wind-exposed places, choose a longer support for more stability.
Offset base plates for gates
A gate puts more load on its post than a panel does. The offset base plates are made for gate posts, in four post sizes starting at 2-3/8" x 2-3/8". Choose the plate that matches your gate post.
Welded base plates
Where a fence on paving or a slab must be as rigid as possible, a base plate welded to the foot of the post gives one solid unit. For chain link, a weld-on base plate of 6" x 6" x 1/4" is listed with the chain link fence accessories.
Fortress Pro-Poxy anchoring epoxy
The Fortress Pro-Poxy Anchoring Epoxy Kit, 8.5 fl oz, sets anchors and posts in concrete. A replacement static mixer and the A-24 nozzle for the A-500 kit are sold as spare parts.
Fortress ReadySet post setting compound
ReadySet is Fortress's post setting compound, sold in a 50 lb bag. It sets a fence post in its hole without mixing concrete by hand.
Are fasteners included?
No. The bolts for a base plate depend on the surface, such as concrete, asphalt or brick, so they are not included. Choose anchors made for your surface, or ask us for advice.
