Fence Accessories

Most panel fences need the same short list of parts. Work through it post by post:

1. Brackets or clamps for every post, in the size and shape of that post: end brackets at the ends and gates, corner brackets at corners and inline brackets along the run.
2. A cap for every open post top.
3. A base plate for every post that stands on concrete instead of in a footing.
4. Connectors and rails where the fence has a top rail, a horizontal rail system or ends at a wall.
5. Extras by need: privacy slats, barbed wire arms with barbed wire, or fixings such as security screws.
6. Touch-up paint for cut ends and scratches.

Longlip brackets fix welded wire panels to round posts of 2-3/8" and 3-1/2" and to square posts of 2", 2-3/8" and 3", in end, corner and inline versions. Fence clamps fit square and rectangular posts and are sold per piece or per box.

Security fence has its own parts: U-brackets with strips, spider brackets, security fence brackets and coverplates. Fortress brackets fit Fortress ornamental fence; they are gloss black, and each pack holds the brackets and fasteners for the panel ends it is sold for.

Caps close the top of a post against rain and finish the fence. There are PVC caps for round posts of 1-5/8", 2-3/8" and 3-1/2", PVC and aluminum caps for square and rectangular posts, caps with an overhang, a PVC drive-in cap for 3-1/8" x 3-1/8" posts and a steel cap for 3" x 3" posts. Fortress ball, dome, line and corner caps fit Fortress posts.

Base plates bolt a post to a slab, a foundation or a wall. They are made for square, rectangular and round posts, and offset base plates are made for gate posts. Fortress Pro-Poxy anchoring epoxy, in an 8.5 fl oz kit, sets anchors and posts in concrete, and Fortress ReadySet, in a 50 lb bag, sets a post in its hole without mixing concrete by hand.

T-connectors join a rail to a round post, tube connectors in PVC or aluminum join two rails end to end, and the angle fence connector handles a change of direction. The gate and wall connector and the wall mounting plate fix a twin or single wire panel to a gate post or a wall.

The Horizontal Rail System adds two or three 2" x 2" rails to the back of a security fence, to stiffen the mesh and make it harder to tamper with.

Privacy strips weave through the mesh of a double wire panel to block the view, and clips lock the strip ends. The Gardenode Solstice kit fills a whole double wire panel with composite slats and an aluminum top rail.

Barbed wire arms mount at the top of the post and hold two or three strands above the fence, straight, angled at 45 degrees or as a double angled V. Barbed wire comes in rolls of 656 ft and 820 ft, tension wire in a roll of 361 ft and tie wire in a roll of 328 ft, with wire tensioners and a tension rod to keep the wire tight.

A cut panel, a drilled hole or a scratch leaves bare steel that can rust. Spray cans come in two sizes, and the Fortress Versai gloss black paint can and paint pen match the Fortress finish.
