Basketball Goal

An outdoor basketball goal is a steel post with backboard and hoop, made to stand outside on schoolyards, playgrounds and community courts. Choose the rim height first: 10 ft for regulation play or 8.5 ft for younger players. Then choose the mounting: a base plate that bolts to a concrete foundation, or an extended post set directly in the ground. Read more

Which basketball goal height do I need?

The range comes in two rim heights. The 10 ft rim is the official height used in adult and professional basketball. The 8.5 ft rim is a youth height for junior players, elementary schools and training areas.

  • 10 ft: for teenagers and adults, and for courts where games are played at the official height.
  • 8.5 ft: for younger players who cannot yet reach a regulation rim, and for practice courts.

On a court used by all ages, a mix of both heights lets younger children practice while older players use the regulation goal.

Base plate or extended: what is the difference?

Each height comes in two versions. A base plate goal stands on a steel plate that is bolted to a concrete foundation. An extended goal has a longer post that is set directly in the ground. Both give a stable goal for busy places such as schoolyards and public courts.

  • Base plate: bolt-down mounting on a concrete foundation, so the goal can be placed on a new or existing slab with anchors.
  • Extended: the post goes into the ground and is set in concrete, with no plate at the surface.

Steel and finish for outdoor use

The posts are made of heavy-duty steel with either a hot-dip galvanized finish for rust protection or a powder-coated finish for a colored look. Both are made for daily outdoor use in all weather.

Where are outdoor basketball goals used?

  • Schools and schoolyards, where goals see heavy daily use.
  • Parks, playgrounds and community courts run by municipalities.
  • Sports complexes and multi-sport courts, often next to a soccer goal and inside a sports fence.

How is a basketball goal installed?

  1. Choose the position: the backboard should face the court, with clear space behind and beside the post.
  2. Check for buried cables and pipes before you dig.
  3. For a base plate goal, pour a concrete foundation with anchor bolts, let it cure, then bolt the plate down and check that the post is plumb.
  4. For an extended goal, dig the hole, set the post in concrete and brace it plumb until the concrete has cured.
  5. Check the rim height and level before the court is used.

Follow the installation instructions that come with the goal for foundation size and depth.

Safety around the pole

  • Keep the area around the post free of fences, walls and benches that players could run into.
  • Check the fixings, the backboard and the rim regularly, and repair damage before use.
  • Do not let anyone climb the post or the backboard.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What height should a basketball hoop be?

The official rim height is 10 ft. For younger players and training courts, the 8.5 ft youth goal is easier to reach.

What is the difference between base plate and extended models?

A base plate goal is bolted to a concrete foundation through a steel plate. An extended goal has a longer post that is set directly in the ground in concrete.

How is a basketball goal installed?

Base plate goals bolt onto anchor bolts in a cured concrete foundation. Extended goals are set in a concrete-filled hole and braced plumb until the concrete cures.

Is the goal suitable for a school playground?

Yes. The goals are heavy-duty steel with a galvanized or powder-coated finish, made for schools, playgrounds and public courts.

How do I keep the goal from rusting?

Choose a hot-dip galvanized finish for the strongest rust protection, check the goal regularly and touch up scratches in a coated finish.
