3" Fence Posts

A 3" fence post is the heavier step up from 2-3/8". The Van Merksteijn 3" x 3" square steel post comes in black in two wall gauges: 12 GA for standard runs and the heavier 9 GA where the post carries more load, such as on tall fences, gate posts and windy sites. Ornamental and Fortress posts in the 3" size are listed here too. Read more

When do I need a 3" fence post?

The 3" x 3" post is a step up from the standard 2-3/8" post. Choose it when the fence is taller than usual, when it is a 358 security fence, when the run is exposed to strong wind, or when the post has to carry a gate. It is used on homes and on commercial and industrial sites alike.

Because the post is wider, it also gives a broader face for brackets and coverplates, which suits heavier panels and security fence.

Sizes and specifications

  • Van Merksteijn 12 GA post: powder coated black, in whole-foot lengths from 6' to 14'.
  • Van Merksteijn 9 GA post: powder coated black, in the same lengths from 6' to 14'.
  • Both: 3" x 3" outside, so the same brackets and caps fit.
  • Ornamental 3" x 3" posts in 14 and 11 GA, for ornamental steel fences.
  • Fortress V2, Versai and A2 posts in their 3" size, for Fortress fences.

Which wall thickness should I choose?

Both Van Merksteijn posts have the same outside size. The difference is the steel in the wall:

  • 12 GA wall: the standard version for regular fence runs of normal height.
  • 9 GA wall: a thicker wall, since a lower gauge number means thicker steel, for tall fences, long exposed runs, corners that take a lot of pull and gate posts.

If you are unsure, use the heavier post at gates and corners and the standard post along the run.

Which length do I need?

The post length is the fence height plus the depth of the footing. A common rule is 2 to 3 ft in concrete, more in soft soil, at gates and where the frost goes deep. For a 358 security fence that gives an 8' post for a 6' fence, a 10' post for an 8' fence and a 12' post for a 10' fence. With a 3 ft footing, an 8' fence takes an 11' post. Every length from 6' to 14' is listed, so you can add a foot where the ground asks for it.

Which brackets fit a 3" post?

These parts are made for the 3" x 3" post and are listed in Fence Brackets and the other accessory categories:

  • Longlip fence brackets in end, corner and inline versions, for welded wire panels.
  • Fence clamps, sold per piece.
  • U-brackets for security fence, with the matching strips, plus corner U-brackets and corner strips.
  • Coverplates for security fence, straight and corner.
  • A barbed wire arm, 45 degree angled, for three strands of barbed wire.

Which cap fits a 3" post?

The steel fence post cap for 3" x 3" posts closes the top against rain. It is listed in Post Caps. Fortress caps of the same nominal size are made for Fortress posts, so order the steel cap for these posts.

How do I install 3" fence posts?

  1. Mark the line and set the end and corner posts first, in concrete.
  2. Stretch a string line between them at the top and bottom of the panel height.
  3. Set the posts along the run at the spacing of your panels, checking each one for plumb.
  4. Let the concrete cure, then fix the panels with the brackets for your fence type.
  5. Close every post with a cap.
