Which square post do I need?

Choose the post by the fence it carries and by the load on it:

  • 2" x 2" in 16 GA: for lighter and lower fences, in 6', 7' and 8' lengths.
  • 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" smooth: the standard square post for welded wire panels of normal height, in 6', 7', 8', 9', 10' and 11' lengths.
  • 3" x 3" with a 0.079" wall: the heavier post for taller fences and security fence.
  • 3" x 3" with a 0.114" wall: for tall fences, exposed runs, corners and gate posts.
  • Vinyl 5" x 5", 8 ft long, white: for vinyl privacy fence.
  • Ornamental posts of 2", 2-1/2" and 3", in-ground or surface mount: for ornamental steel panels.
  • Fortress V2, V3, Titan and Versai steel posts, up to 6": for Fortress ornamental and industrial fences.
  • Aluminum posts: Fortress A2 and Athens, and the Gardenode Equinox 3-1/8" x 3-1/8" post and 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" gate post.

Wall thickness explained

The outside size decides which brackets and caps fit. The wall thickness decides how much steel is in the post. For the 3" x 3" post you can choose the wall, so use the heavier one where the post works hardest: at gates, at corners and on tall or exposed fences. Both 3" x 3" posts come in whole feet from 6' to 14', so a 10' 358 security fence takes a 12' post.

Brackets and caps for square posts

Each steel size has its own family of parts:

  • 2" x 2": Longlip end and inline brackets.
  • 2-3/8" x 2-3/8": Longlip end, corner and inline brackets, fence clamps, security fence U-brackets and coverplates, aluminum and PVC caps, base plates and barbed wire arms.
  • 3" x 3": Longlip end, corner and inline brackets, fence clamps, security fence U-brackets and coverplates, a steel cap and a 45 degree barbed wire arm.
  • Ornamental, Fortress and aluminum posts: the brackets and caps of their own fence system, listed with that fence.

The vinyl square post

The white vinyl post is the same 5" x 5" post that comes with each vinyl privacy panel. Every panel brings one post, so a straight run of five panels needs six posts: the five that come with the panels and one extra at the far end. Vinyl never needs painting.

How do I set square posts?

  1. Set the end and corner posts first, in concrete, and check them for plumb on two faces.
  2. Stretch a string line and set the posts along the run at the width of your panels.
  3. A common rule is 2 to 3 ft deep, deeper for tall fences, gates and soft soil: an 8' post suits a 6' fence and a 10' post an 8' fence.
  4. On a slab, bolt a 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" post down on a base plate instead.
  5. Fix the panels, then close every steel post with a cap.

Ordering and delivery

Order the posts together with the brackets and caps for the same size, so every part matches. Each product page lists the lengths and finishes of that post. A size without a price is sold on request: ask for a quote. Fenceweb delivers to every US state and to Canada.
