When should I use round fence posts?
Round posts suit fences that are built as a frame: a top rail runs from post to post through T-connectors or caps, and the panels or fabric hang from that frame. They also carry welded wire panels on round Longlip brackets, which clamp around the tube.
A round post looks the same from every side, which makes corners and changes of direction simple: the brackets can face any way around the post.
Which round post size do I need?
- 2-3/8", 13 GA, black, 7', 9', 10' or 11' long: the standard round post for welded wire panels and frame fences of normal height.
- 3-1/2", 10 GA, black, 13', 16', 19' or 22' long: the heavier round post, for tall fences such as a ball stop.
- 3-1/2", 8 GA, black, 13' long: the same post with a heavier wall.
- Chain link: 1-5/8" line posts, 2-3/8" terminal posts in 16 gauge, .095" wall or Schedule 40, and 2-7/8" gate posts, galvanized.
- TempFence Wholesale 1-5/8" x 8' steel post, for temporary and light fences.
Lengths come in whole feet, so take the fence height plus at least 2 ft for the concrete: a 7' post for a 4' fence, a 9' post for a 6' fence and a 10' post for an 8' fence. Round posts are also the framework of a chain link fence; the chain link line, terminal and gate posts are listed here and in Chain Link Fence Posts.
Brackets and connectors for round posts
- Longlip brackets for round posts, in end, corner and inline versions for both sizes.
- T-connectors that join a rail to the post, including a 3-1/2" post with 2-3/8" rails.
- Strap end-connectors in stainless steel for 2-3/8" and 3-1/2" posts.
- Barbed wire arms for 2-3/8" round posts, straight, angled or double angled.
Caps for round posts
An open round post fills with rain. PVC caps close the top of 2-3/8" and 3-1/2" posts, and the 2-3/8" range adds an inline cap with hooks and a cap with a pass-through for a 1-5/8" rail. All are in Post Caps.
Line, corner and gate posts
On a frame fence, the posts along the run carry the rail and the fabric, while the posts at ends, corners and gates take the pull of the fence or the weight of the gate. Use the heavier size at those points when the fence is tall or the gate is wide.
How do I set round posts?
- Set the end and corner posts first, in concrete, and check them for plumb.
- Stretch a string line between them and set the posts along the run.
- A common rule is 2 to 3 ft deep, deeper for tall fences and soft soil.
- On concrete, set a 2-3/8" round post on the round base plate instead of a footing.
- Fit the brackets or rail, then close every post with a cap.

Frequently asked questions
Which round post size do I need?
The 2-3/8" post in 13 GA for standard runs, 7' to 11' long. The 3-1/2" post in 10 GA, 13' to 22' long, for tall fences such as a ball stop.
Can round posts be used with welded wire panels?
Yes. Round Longlip brackets clamp around the post and hold the panel, in end, corner and inline versions.
Which post do I need for a gate?
A gate puts more load on its post, so set gate posts deeper in concrete than line posts. The heavier 3-1/2" round post comes 13' to 22' long and suits tall fences such as a ball stop.
Which caps fit round posts?
PVC caps for 2-3/8" and 3-1/2" posts, plus an inline cap with hooks and a pass-through cap for the 2-3/8" size.
How deep should a round post be set?
A common rule is 2 to 3 ft in concrete, more for tall fences, gate posts and soft soil.
How long are the round posts?
The 2-3/8" post comes 7', 9', 10' or 11' long and the 3-1/2" post 13', 16', 19' or 22', all in black. The chain link and TempFence posts list their own lengths on their product pages.
