A 2-3/8" fence post is the standard post size for welded wire panel fences, tube frame fences and chain link terminals. Choose the round post for round brackets, T-connectors and rail sleeves, the smooth 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" square post for square brackets and fence clamps, or a galvanized chain link terminal post. Caps and base plates are sold separately. Read more

Which fences use a 2-3/8" post?

2-3/8" is the most common post size for panel fences. It carries welded wire panels on homes, schools and commercial sites, and the round version also serves as framework for chain link and tube frame fences. Many of our brackets, caps, base plates and barbed wire arms are made for this size, so one post size covers residential gardens, property boundaries and commercial perimeters.

For taller or heavier fences, and for gate posts on wide gates, look at the 3" square post or the 3-1/2" round post instead.

Round or square?

All posts here have the same outside size; the bracket system and the fence decide which one you need.

  • Round post: fits round Longlip brackets, T-connectors, rail sleeves, round caps and round barbed wire arms. Choose it for tube frame and chain link style fences and wherever a top rail joins the post.
  • Smooth square post: fits square Longlip brackets, fence clamps, security fence U-brackets and coverplates. Choose it for welded wire panels with a flat bracket face.
  • Chain link terminal post: galvanized, in 16 gauge, .095" wall or Schedule 40, for the ends, corners and gates of a chain link fence.

Brackets and parts for the round post

  • Longlip end, corner and inline brackets for round 2-3/8" posts
  • T-connectors that join a 1-5/8" or 2-3/8" rail to the post
  • PVC post caps, including an inline cap with hooks, and a cap with a pass-through for a 1-5/8" rail
  • Barbed wire arms: straight for two or three strands, 45 degree angled, and double 45 degree
  • A round base plate of about 12" long and a drive-in elbow

Brackets and parts for the square post

  • Longlip end, corner and inline brackets for 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" posts
  • Fence clamps, per piece or per box
  • U-brackets, strips and coverplates for security fence
  • Aluminum and PVC post caps, with or without overhang
  • A short base plate and an offset base plate for gate posts
  • Barbed wire arms, straight or 45 degree angled, for three strands

How long should the post be?

The smooth square and the round post are black and come in whole-foot lengths: the smooth square post in 6', 7', 8', 9', 10' and 11', the round post in 7', 9', 10' and 11'. Choose the post length by the fence height. About 2 ft of a post goes into concrete, more for gates, tall fences and soft ground, and the local frost depth can ask for more. As a rule, use a 6' post for a 4' fence, an 8' post for a 6' fence and a 10' post for an 8' fence.

The chain link terminal posts are galvanized and come in the lengths listed on each product page.

How to set a 2-3/8" post

  1. Stretch a string along the fence line and mark the post positions.
  2. Have underground utilities marked and check the local frost depth.
  3. Dig the hole; as a general rule, set the post at least 2 to 3 ft deep in concrete, depending on the fence height and the soil.
  4. Set the post plumb against the string and fill the hole with concrete or quick-setting concrete.
  5. Let the concrete set, then fit the brackets and hang the panels.

On a slab or a wall, use a base plate instead of a footing.

Do the posts come with caps?

The posts come without post caps. Order the cap that matches the shape of the post, round or square, together with the brackets for your panels. A cap keeps water out of the post.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a round or a square 2-3/8" post?

Follow your bracket system. Round posts take round brackets, T-connectors and rail sleeves; square posts take square brackets, fence clamps and security fence coverplates.

Which fence panels go on a 2-3/8" post?

Welded wire panels of normal height, fixed with Longlip brackets or fence clamps. The round post also serves as framework for tube frame and chain link style fences.

Which brackets fit this post?

Longlip end, corner and inline brackets in round and square versions, fence clamps, U-brackets and coverplates, all listed for 2-3/8" posts.

How deep should the post be set?

At least 2 to 3 ft in concrete as a general rule, depending on the fence height and the soil.

How long a post do I need?

Long enough for about 2 ft in concrete: a 6' post for a 4' fence, an 8' post for a 6' fence and a 10' post for an 8' fence.

Do the posts come with a post cap?

No. The posts come without caps; order a round or square cap for 2-3/8" posts separately.
