Which metal post do I need?

The post follows the panel. Each panel system is made for certain post sizes and brackets, so start from the panel you have chosen. Then pick the length for your fence height, the wall thickness for the load, and the way the post is fixed: set in the ground or bolted down on a base plate.

Posts work as end, corner or line posts depending on the brackets you fit. Corner posts take the pull of two runs, and gate posts carry the weight of a swinging gate, so those are the places to step up a size or a wall thickness.

Round, square or rectangular?

  • Round posts look the same from every side, so a fence line looks straight even if a post turns slightly in the ground. They suit welded wire panels with round Longlip brackets and fence lines that change angle.
  • Square posts give straight lines and a flat face for brackets, coverplates and rail brackets. They carry welded wire panels, 358 security mesh and ornamental fence.
  • Rectangular posts are flat posts for double wire and gabion systems, listed under Fence Post.

Sizes and specifications

Posts for welded wire and security panels

  • 2-3/8" round post, 13 GA, black: 7', 9', 10' and 11' long, for double wire and V-fence panels.
  • 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" square post, 12 GA, black: 6', 7', 8', 9', 10' and 11' long, for double wire and V-fence panels.
  • 3" x 3" square post, 12 GA or 9 GA, black: 6' to 14' long in whole feet, for 358 security fence, tall runs, corners and gates.
  • 3-1/2" round post, 10 GA, black: 13', 16', 19' and 22' long, for tall fences such as a ball stop.
  • 2" x 2" square post, 16 GA, black: 6', 7' and 8' long, for lighter fences.

Ornamental fence posts

Fenceweb's black ornamental posts are square steel tube for in-ground installation, with a cap included:

  • 2-1/2" 14 gauge, in 7, 8 and 9 ft lengths, the standard post for an ornamental fence line.
  • 3" 11 gauge, in 10 and 11 ft lengths, for 7 and 8 ft fences and gate posts.
  • 3" 14 gauge, 8 ft long, for gate positions and runs where a 2-1/2" post is light.
  • 2" 16 gauge, 96" long, galvanized and powder coated black.

Fortress posts

Fortress makes posts for each of its lines, all in gloss black powder coat. Fortress Versai posts are 2" in 14 or 16 GA or 3" in 14 GA, 6' to 9' long. Fortress V2 Commercial posts come in 2-1/2" (16, 14 or 12 GA), 3" (14 or 12 GA), 4" (11 GA) and 6", from 5' to 13' long. The Fortress Titan Industrial and V3 Industrial posts are 6" square with a 3/16" wall, 132" and 120" long, with a pressed dome cap closing the top.

Surface mount posts for concrete

  • Fenceweb 2-1/2" 14 gauge post with a welded 5" x 5" base plate, for bolting a 6 ft or 8 ft ornamental fence to concrete.
  • Fenceweb 2" 16 gauge post with a welded 4" x 4" base plate, for fence of 3 to 5 ft on concrete, pavers or decks.
  • Fortress Versai 2" surface mount post with a 5" base plate, 36" to 74" long.

On a surface mount post the length is the fence height plus a little, because nothing goes into the ground. Anchor the plate with fixings made for your slab or wall.

Which post for which fence?

  • Double wire and V-fence panels: 2-3/8" round posts or 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" square posts with Longlip brackets.
  • 358 security mesh: 3" x 3" square posts with U-brackets, spider brackets and coverplates.
  • Fenceweb ornamental panels: 2", 2-1/2" or 3" square ornamental posts with rail brackets.
  • Fortress panels: the Fortress post made for that line, with the Fortress brackets.
  • Fence on a slab, deck or wall: a surface mount post, or a standard post on a base plate.

Post length and footing depth

An in-ground post is longer than the fence is high, because part of it goes into the concrete. For double wire, V-fence and 358 panels, about 2 ft goes into concrete as a rule, more for tall fences, gates and soft ground: an 8' post for a 6' fence, a 10' post for an 8' fence and a 12' post for a 10' security fence. For Fortress Versai, set a post about 24" deeper than the fence height, or follow the length Fortress pairs with your panel height. For other lines, use the post length shown for your panel height on the product page, and check the local frost depth.

How to set metal fence posts

  1. Call 811 to have buried utilities marked, then stretch a string line along the fence.
  2. Set the end and corner posts first, in concrete, plumb in both directions.
  3. Mark the line posts at the panel width and set them against the string, checking each one with a level.
  4. Let the concrete cure before you hang panels or gates.
  5. Fit the brackets for your panel system and close every post with a cap.

Brackets, caps and anchors

Posts take the brackets of their panel system: Longlip brackets for welded wire, 358 brackets and coverplates, or ornamental rail brackets. Fenceweb ornamental posts come with a cap; for other posts, order PVC, aluminum or steel caps in the post size so rain cannot get in. Base plates for setting standard posts on concrete are listed under Post Anchors.

Every post here is steel, galvanized against rust and on most products powder coated on top. Fenceweb delivers metal fence posts to every US state and to Canada; Fortress posts ship by freight from Garland, Texas. A size without a price on its product page is sold on request: ask for a quote.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Which post fits my fence panel?

Use the post size the panel system is made for: 2-3/8" round or square posts for welded wire, 3" x 3" square posts for 358 mesh, and square ornamental posts for picket panels.

How long should a fence post be?

Longer than the fence height, so it can be set in concrete: as a rule about 2 ft goes into the ground, so an 8' post carries a 6' fence. For Fortress Versai, add about 24" to the fence height.

Round or square posts?

Round posts look the same from every side and suit round Longlip brackets. Square posts give a flat face for brackets, coverplates and rail brackets.

Can I mount a metal post on concrete?

Yes. Surface mount posts have a welded base plate: 5" x 5" or 4" x 4" on Fenceweb posts and 5" on the Fortress Versai post.

Do ornamental posts come with a cap?

Fenceweb ornamental posts, in-ground and surface mount, come with a cap included, so no separate cap is needed.

What is the heaviest post in this category?

The Fortress Titan Industrial and V3 Industrial posts, 6" square with a 3/16" wall.
