Gate Hinge

A gate hinge carries the weight of the gate and lets it swing. Weld-on hinges give the strongest steel joint, bolt-on hinges fit where welding is not an option, and adjustable hinges can be set after mounting so the gate closes true. Choose by gate weight and material, by how far the gate must open, and by whether it should close by itself. Read more

How to choose a gate hinge

  1. Weigh the gate, or estimate it, and pick a hinge rated above that weight.
  2. Match the material: steel, aluminum, wood and vinyl gates each have hinges made for them.
  3. Decide how it fixes: weld-on, bolt-on or screw-on.
  4. Decide how far it opens: 90 degrees, or 180 degrees for a gate that swings back flat against the fence.
  5. Decide whether the gate must close by itself; if so, see Self Closing Hinges.

Shut It BadAss hinges from D&D Technologies

The BadAss range covers light pedestrian gates up to heavy drive gates, with these ratings from the product data:

  • Baby BadAss: 300 lb maximum gate weight, weld-on or bolt-on, for pedestrian gates and low use drive gates.
  • BadAss Powder Coated Bolt-On: 1,000 lb maximum gate weight, two sealed bearings, for aluminum and steel gates where welding is not an option.
  • Face Mount Bolt-On and Weld-On: open a full 180 degrees, with gate gaps as small as 1/2".
  • Heavy-Duty BadAss: three sealed bearings and 1,500 lb maximum gate weight.
  • 100 Year BadAss: the toughest hinge in the range, 1,500 lb maximum gate weight, backed by D&D with a 100 year warranty.
  • Aluminum BadAss and the Combo models for aluminum gates and mixed steel and aluminum installations, 595 lb maximum gate weight.
  • Round Bolt-On BadAss for a square gate on a round post, and strap hinges, including an uphill set for gates that rise as they open on sloping ground.

Replacement spacers and yokes are sold separately, so a worn part can be replaced without a new hinge.

KwikFit, TruClose and Wood Hardware

KwikFit hinges suit light aluminum, vinyl and wood gates: the polymer plain-pivot hinge carries gates up to 55 lb, and the self-closing versions close gates up to 44 lb. TruClose self-closing hinges, SureClose hinge-closers and the stainless steel adjustable-tension hinges are listed here and in Self Closing Hinges. The D&D Wood Hardware range adds T-hinges, strap hinges and butterfly hinges for timber gates, powder coated before assembly and adjustable to overcome ground sag.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose weld-on or bolt-on hinges?

Weld-on hinges give the strongest joint on steel gates; bolt-on hinges, such as the Shut It Bolt-On BadAss, are for gates where welding on site is not an option.

How many hinges does a gate need?

A single gate leaf normally hangs on a pair of hinges, which is why many hinges here, such as the Shut It BadAss pairs, are sold as a pair.

Which hinge lets a gate open 180 degrees?

The Shut It BadAss Face Mount hinges, the BadAss barrel and strap hinges, and the Locinox Dino, Puma and Excentro hinges all allow a 180 degree opening.

Can a hinge be used on a sloping driveway?

Yes. The Locinox Excentro hinge set is made for ascending slopes, and the Shut It BadAss uphill strap hinge set lets a gate rise as it opens.

Do I need a gate restrainer?

A restrainer is a safety device that stops a swing gate falling if a hinge fails, and is worth fitting on heavy gates near people or vehicles.

Which hinge suits a heavy steel gate?

Check the gate weight: the Shut It Heavy-Duty BadAss and 100 Year BadAss carry gates up to 1,500 lb.
