Fence Gates

The gates are grouped by how they open and what they are for:

• Swing Gates: a single leaf on hinges, for paths, side entrances and pedestrian access.
• Double Gates: two leaves that meet in the middle, for driveways and vehicle entrances.
• Sliding Gates: a gate that rolls sideways along the fence line instead of swinging.
• Farm Gates: tubular steel gates for pastures, paddocks and pens.
• Gate Hardware: hinges, closers, latches, locks, handles, keeps, drop bolts and adapters for any of them.

After the type, the fence decides the rest. A gate from the same system as the fence matches its style, color, height and posts.

The Swing Gates category holds single leaf walk gates for several fence systems:

• Welded wire system gates 3, 4 or 5 ft wide, black, in 4', 6' and 8' heights, for welded wire mesh fences such as double wire.
• A black ornamental steel walk gate 40" wide with a flat top, in four heights to match the panels of that range.
• Fortress walk gates in Versai, V2 Commercial and V3 Industrial steel, A2 Commercial and Athens aluminum, and Estate, which combines a welded ornamental steel frame with wood or composite pickets.
• A white vinyl privacy gate 6 ft high and 4 ft wide, with the same tongue-and-groove pickets as the vinyl privacy panel.

Most Fortress walk gates come 4 ft or 5 ft wide, with a choice of top styles such as flat top, pressed spear and extended picket.

A double gate opens a wide entrance without one long, heavy leaf. The Double Gates category has complete welded wire double gates 10, 13 or 16 ft wide and 4', 6' and 8' high for double wire fences, and Fortress drive gate leaves in steel and aluminum, 6 ft or 8 ft wide depending on the line, flat or arched, plus the Fortress Estate drive gate leaf. A Fortress drive gate leaf is one leaf: order two for a double gate, and a drop rod to pin the inactive leaf into the ground.

A sliding gate suits a short or sloping driveway, or a wide site entrance where a swing gate would hit a car or a slope. The ornamental steel sliding gate runs on two V-groove wheels, has 1" square pickets and a flat top, and comes 14 ft or 24 ft wide and 4, 5, 6 or 8 ft high in black. The gate slides along the fence, so it needs a clear stretch beside the opening about as long as the gate itself.

The Farm Gates category carries the Tarter Watchman wire mesh gate in 3 ft, 4 ft and 6 ft widths, all 50" tall. A 1-3/4" round steel tube frame is filled with welded wire, so legs and hooves cannot get caught and smaller animals cannot push through. Each gate ships with two screw-in hinge pins and a snap chain. Watchman is made for light confinement of horses, goats, sheep and other smaller animals.

Hardware makes a gate hang straight, close by itself and lock. The Gate Hardware category is split into Gate Hinge, Self Closing Hinges, Gate Closer, Gate Latch, Pool Gate Latch, Gate Locks, Magnetic Gate Locks, Gate Keep, Gate Handle, Gate Drop Bolt and Gate Adapter. The brands are Locinox, Gatemaster, D&D Technologies, Fortress and AES Global. Choose hardware by the material and profile size of the gate, its weight, how often it is used and whether it has to be self-closing and self-latching.

1. Measure the clear opening between the faces of the two posts, at the top and at the bottom, and use the smaller figure.
2. Check how the gate is sold. Chain link and Tarter farm gates are ordered by the opening: a Tarter gate is about 3" shorter than its listed size to leave room for the hinges. Fortress gates are listed by their nominal width.
3. For a double gate, the opening is shared by two leaves; for a sliding gate, measure the clear run beside the opening as well.
4. Note which way the gate should swing and whether the ground rises inside the swing, before you choose hinges.

Most US pool codes ask for a barrier at least 48" high and self-closing, self-latching gates; check the local code before you buy. Several Fortress steel and aluminum gates are marked by Fortress as meeting the pool code at the pool-code heights, and Versai and V2 Commercial walk gates come in a Pool Flat Top/Flat Bottom style. A gate swings its weight on one post, so it needs a post that suits the system and the gate size.
