How a slat fence is built

Every board is 70-7/8" long and 13/16" thick and spans exactly one bay between two posts 72-7/8" apart on center. The boards slide into the post grooves from the top and stack onto a bottom rail; a top rail closes the bay. Twelve solid slats make a bay about 6 ft tall.

Four styles of board

  • Solid slats: close the view completely, for a private yard or patio.
  • Louvers: angled slats that block the view while air passes, so the fence catches less wind.
  • Openwork slats: 3-3/8" or 5-5/16" wide, held 5/8" apart by spacers for a lighter screen.
  • Decorative panels: laser-cut aluminum in seven designs, Azur, Brahmi, Crystal, Epure, Kadryl, Tropik and Verdi, set into a bay with a framing kit.

Colors

Every aluminum board is powder coated in anthracite gray, quartz gray, black or teak, the same colors as the posts, rails and caps, so a run can be one color or combine two.

Mixing boards in one fence

All boards fit the same posts, so solid slats, louvers, openwork and decorative panels can share one run or one bay: a closed lower half with an openwork top, for example. Aluminum slats need no reinforcement; the steel brace in this category is for composite slats, which take one in every third solid slat.

How many boards do I need?

Count the bays, then the boards per bay. A bay of solid slats about 6 ft tall takes twelve; a lower fence takes fewer. Add a bottom rail, a top rail and the spacers for openwork slats per bay, and a framing kit for each decorative panel.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

How long are aluminum fence slats?

70-7/8". Each slat spans one bay between two Gardenode posts set 72-7/8" apart on center.

How many slats make a 6 ft fence?

Twelve solid slats make a bay about 6 ft tall. Openwork slats need fewer for the same height, because of the gaps between them.

What is the difference between louvers and openwork slats?

Louvers are angled, so air passes but the view stays blocked. Openwork slats are flat and held 5/8" apart, so light and a little view pass through.

Do aluminum slats need a steel brace?

No. Aluminum slats are rigid on their own. The steel brace is for composite slats.

Can I combine decorative panels with slats?

Yes. A decorative panel sits in a framing kit that replaces two solid slats in a bay, or stands upright between two posts.

Which colors are available?

Anthracite gray, quartz gray, black and teak, matching the posts, rails and caps.
