Why a double gate needs one
On a pair of gates only one leaf can latch to a post — the other has nothing solid to latch to. The drop bolt fixes that: it drops into a ground socket and turns the passive leaf into the post the active leaf latches against. Without one, a double gate rattles, sags apart at the center and can be pushed open even when latched.
LokkBolt: key lockable
LokkBolt locks with a key in the raised or lowered position, so the gate cannot be freed by anyone who can reach over it. It comes in 18 inch and 24 inch, in a metal gate version and a vinyl/wood gate version, keyed alike so it can share a key with the LokkLatch on the same gate.
Q-Bolt: padlockable
Q-Bolt takes a padlock rather than having a built-in cylinder, which is often what a site or an agricultural gate wants — the padlock can be changed, keyed to an existing site suite, or removed entirely. Available in 24 inch and 40 inch, for metal and for vinyl and wood gates. The 40 inch version reaches down from a taller gate rail.
Choosing the length
Measure from where the bolt will mount on the gate frame to the ground, and add enough to seat properly in the socket. Too short and the bolt barely engages; too long and it fouls as the gate swings.
Baseplate and socket
A moulded baseplate is stocked for the LokkBolt, which gives the bolt a clean socket in a paved or concrete surface instead of a drilled hole that fills with grit. Worth fitting — a drop bolt that will not seat because the hole is full of stones is the most common complaint about the whole product type.
Material versions
The metal and vinyl/wood versions differ in the fixing, not the bolt. Use the one named for your gate, and use the matching screw pack.
