Welding is not always possible: an aluminium gate, a powder coated gate you do not want to burn, a site with no power, or a tenant who cannot alter the structure. The bolt-on BadAss hinges carry up to 1000 lb gate weight and 2000 lb load on sealed bearings, which covers most residential and light commercial driveway gates.

Round post versions

The round bolt-on hinges come in 4 inch, 6 inch and 8 inch body heights and clamp to a round post, so no flat mounting face is needed. Taller bodies spread the load over more of the post, which is what you want as the gate gets heavier.

Half bolt-on: the hybrid

Half bolt-on hinges bolt to one side and weld to the other. That is the practical answer when the post can be welded but the gate cannot, or vice versa. They are stocked with steel bodies, aluminium bodies and steel/aluminium combinations, in 4 inch and 6 inch — the combination matters, because bolting a steel yoke to an aluminium gate invites galvanic corrosion.

Face mount

Face mount hinges fit where the gate closes against the face of the post rather than into the opening. Note the much tighter gate gap variance on these — around 0.5 to 1.0 inch rather than the 2.7 to 3.2 inch of the round bolt-on models — so measure before ordering.

Powder coated

Powder coated versions are stocked for gates where a zinc hinge would look wrong. The coating is on top of the same hinge, so ratings are unchanged.

Self-closing

Center-mount bolt-on self-closing sets are available where the gate has to return itself, sold as a set or as individual hinges.

A note on bolts

The bolts do the work here, so use the supplied hardware, fit it into sound material and check the torque after the first few weeks of use. A bolt-on hinge that loosens will start to wear the mounting holes oval.
