A cantilever gate carries its own weight on a truck that runs inside the gate frame, with nothing touching the ground — no track to fill with gravel, ice or leaves. That makes it the right answer for wide openings and rough or sloping ground, and it means the hardware has to be chosen as a set: wheels, carriage plates, and a guide to keep the gate vertical.

Wheels and carriages

V-groove wheels come in 4 inch and 6 inch diameters, in 38 mm and 51 mm groove widths to match the track section, and are sold as bare wheels, as wheels with a carriage, or as complete cantilever wheel assemblies. Go up to 6 inch as the gate gets heavier or wider: a bigger wheel spreads the load and rolls over debris rather than stopping at it. Cantilever wheel assemblies are rated 1500 lb gate weight and 3000 lb load.

Carriage plates

Carriage plates are what the wheels bolt to and what welds into the gate. They come in steel and aluminium, in 4 inch and 6 inch, and are sold in pairs. Match the plate material to the gate frame — an aluminium plate belongs in an aluminium gate.

Guides and caps

A guide assembly stops the free end of the gate from swinging out of line; the extended guide is the taller version for gates that need more support. Carriage caps close off the top of the carriage so it does not fill with water and grit, which is the usual reason a wheel seizes early.

Spares

Wheel spacers, cantilever brackets, replacement wheels and the other HardCORE service parts are stocked separately, so a worn wheel is a part order rather than a new gate.

Getting it right first time

Weigh the gate, then choose the wheel — not the other way round. Under-specifying the running gear on a cantilever gate shows up as flat-spotted wheels and a gate that will not roll within a couple of seasons.
