This is the only decision that really matters. TruClose Regular Series 3 self-closes gates up to 66 lb (30 kg) and rates for 150,000 cycles. TruClose Heavy Duty Series 3 takes gates up to 154 lb (70 kg) and rates for 500,000 cycles — worth the difference on a gate that gets used all day. Both adjust for closing tension from either end of the hinge after fitting.

MULTI-ADJUST: the answer to a sagging gate

A gate that has dropped normally means unbolting a hinge and starting again. The MULTI-ADJUST models adjust three ways after the gate is hung — horizontally, vertically and for spring tension — using dials on the hinge, with a gate gap variance range of 3/16 inch to 1 11/16 inch and up to 15/16 inch of vertical adjustment. It fixes sag without taking the gate down, and it is reversible for left or right hand gates.

Match the hinge to the gate material

The range is split by what the gate and post are made of: metal to metal, metal to wood, wood to vinyl, and round post versions. The differences are in the leaf shape and the fixing pattern, so use the version named for your combination rather than forcing a metal hinge onto a timber gate.

Side fixing legs, covers and caps

Most models are available with or without side fixing legs. The legs speed up alignment and add fixing strength into the side of the gate frame, and are worth having on anything that will be used hard. Removable trim covers hide every fastener; black is standard and white is stocked for white gates. For pool and child-safety gates, add the TruClose safety cap, which covers the tension adjuster so it cannot be backed off.
