Rated two ways, and both matter
Every BadAss hinge carries a maximum gate weight and a maximum gate load. Gate weight is what the hinge will carry hung normally; gate load is what it will take including the leverage of a wide gate and someone hanging on the end of it. The Original BadAss is rated 1100 lb gate weight and 2000 lb load on two sealed bearings. Heavy Duty and 100 Year move up to 1500 lb and 3000 lb on three bearings. Baby BadAss is the small one at 300 lb and 500 lb, for pedestrian gates.
Sealed bearings, not a pin in a tube
A plain barrel hinge is a steel pin turning in a steel sleeve: it wears oval, it squeaks, and eventually the gate drops. These run on sealed bearings, so the gate keeps swinging true and needs no greasing. That is the whole design argument, and it is why they are specified where a gate is opened dozens of times a day.
Gap variance and adjustment
Each hinge quotes a gate gap variance — the range of gate-to-post gap it will accommodate, typically around 2.4 to 2.9 inch on the standard weld-on models and a much tighter 0.5 to 1.0 inch on the face mount versions. Check yours before ordering, because a weld-on hinge is not something you want to reposition.
Strap, barrel and specials
Strap hinges in 6 inch and 10 inch spread the load along the gate frame rather than concentrating it, which suits timber-infill and wide gates; the uphill strap hinge set is for gates that have to rise as they open, on sloping ground. The barrel hinge bolts or welds. VersaWeld gives a wider welding surface for awkward frames. The stainless steel BadAss is for coastal and washdown environments where zinc will not last.
Self-closing sets
The plain hinges are not self-closing. Where you need that, the BadAss self-closing hinge-closer sets and the center-mount weld-on sets for round posts are stocked, sold as a set or as individual hinges so you can mix a self-closing hinge with a plain one on the same gate.
Fitting
These are welded, which means an installer with a welder and the gate properly supported while the welds cool. Replacement bolts, springs and yokes are stocked separately, so a damaged hinge does not mean cutting a new one in.
